About Us

Disha is a non-governmental organization which provides assistance to marginalized
children, youth and women from the Manoharpukur slum area in Kolkata, in spheres of education, health and capacity building.
Our Story

In 1992, a domestic help asked Ms.Neena Singh for a personal loan to send her son to after-school tuition. Disha

was conceived at that moment as the veteran educator realised that the children of socioeconomically

challenged sections of society need remedial education even more than those who can afford tuition

and coaching classes.

Disha began with six children who were cajoled, coerced and bribed into attending evening sessions

under staircases and in adhoc spaces generously shared by its first well-wishers.

A Chain of events aligned as Ms. Bhavan Ganatra a Yoga Teacher in Divyayan introduced us to her Brother

Mr. Pankaj Ganatra who at the time was heading the Lion's Club. He immediately provided us the space to

start.

Ms. Ranjana Roy who was retiring from Modern High School agreed to head up the initiative.

And finally Ms. Rama Bhatia who was heading the Lioness Club at the time was instrumental in getting our own space at 119/1B Manohar Pukur Road 1st Floor.

In the words of Paulo Coelho 'And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.'

Our Philosophy

“EMPOWER the child with QUALITY, HOLISTIC EDUCATION and OPPORTUNITIES to develop into RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS to overcome SOCIAL INJUSTICE.”
